Monique Steijns

Monique Steijns is the founder of the People’s AIGENCY “connecting the dots in human rights and technology” and has a background in law, policy, and social justice.

In her work, she focuses on how data-driven and digital technologies impact human rights. Steijns has conducted research for the Dutch Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR) on the engagement of civil society in the deployment and governance of AI, and she currently advises the Dutch State Commission on preventing Algorithmic Discrimination.

From a human rights perspective, she also serves as an advisor for the Dutch Technical Standard Agreement on the responsible use of algorithms. In 2025, Steijns initiated Code Noire, a talk show that amplifies the voices of Black women and women of color on the topic of AI. Furthermore Monique Steijns is a co-chair of the Digital Freedom Fund and has a seat in the accountability committee of Weaving Liberation.
